Jules Spinatsch hat in den letzten 35 Jahren ein umfangreiches Werk geschaffen, das im In- und Ausland ausgestellt, gesammelt und publiziert wurde. Die Ausstellung im Bündner Kunstmuseum zeigt das breite mediale Spektrum seiner Arbeiten und Vorgehensweisen. Eigenes, gefundenes und gefilmtes Bildmaterial verarbeitet und arrangiert der Künstler zu Publikationen, Bildserien und fotografischen Installationen. Ausgehend von einem dokumentarischen Ansatz – „von dem, was ist, nicht was sein soll“ – untersucht Spinatsch die Möglichkeiten der Fotografie: von der Beobachtung gesellschaftlicher Ereignisse mittels Straight Photography bis zur Entwicklung halbautomatischer Aufnahmeverfahren, die scheinbar gegensätzliche Prinzipien wie Zufall und Kontrolle zu neuen Bildformen verbinden. Der Wiener Opernball, das WEF in Davos, Softwarefirmen, Atomkraftwerke, Gefängnisse, Wintersportveranstaltungen oder auch brodelnde Schlammpools in Island werden zu seinen Forschungsräumen.
Im Bündner Kunstmuseum realisiert der Künstler eine Präsentation, die im zweiten Untergeschoss eine neue Raumdramaturgie einführt.

Over the past 35 years, Jules Spinatsch has created an extensive body of work that has been exhibited, collected and published both in Switzerland and abroad. The exhibition at the Bündner Kunstmuseum shows the broad spectrum of his works and approaches. The artist processes and arranges his own, found and filmed image material into publications, image series and photographic installations. Starting from a documentary approach – ‘of what is, not what should be’ – Spinatsch explores the possibilities of photography: from observing social events using straight photography to developing semi-automatic recording techniques that combine seemingly contradictory principles such as chance and control to create new forms of imagery. The Vienna Opera Ball, the WEF in Davos, software companies, nuclear power plants, prisons, winter sports events and even bubbling mud pools in Iceland become his research spaces.
At the Bündner Kunstmuseum, the artist is staging a presentation that introduces a new spatial dramaturgy in the second basement. Spinatsch invites you to explore the potential and limitations of photography.

A two-volume monograph will be published to accompany the exhibition.
