4. Final Storage Walk: Sunday 13. September 2026

The WNWD Memorial Day was first publicly announced at the IAEA, International Atomic Energy Agency, Conference on 2. March 2023 in Vienna:

“I suggest to found a world nuclear waste day WNWD, to contribute to the transport of the knowledge of the nuclear heritage over generations. I suggest the 12. September“ Jules Spinatsch

The founding act took place on 10. September 2023, as part of the first Final Storage Walk to the Haberstal, the future site of the final storage for all fuel elements from the four the swiss nuclear power plants. The 2. Final Storage Walk took place on Sunday 8. September 2024,  from Windlach along Endbergstrasse to the Haberstal-Valley.

Der WNWD-Gedenktag wurde an einer Konferenz der Internationalen Atomenergiebehörde IAEA am 2. März 2023 in Wien angekündigt: „Ich schlage vor, einen Welttag des Atommülls zu gründen, um dazu beizutragen, das Wissen über das nukleare Erbe über Generationen zu transportieren. Ich schlage den 12. September vor.“ Jules Spinatsch.
Am 12. September 2022, nach 50 Jahren Suche, hat die Nationale Genossenschaft für die Lagerung radioaktiver Abfälle, NAGRA  ihren Wunschstandort für ein nukleares Endlager in der Schweiz und den Zeitplan vom Bau, Befüllung bis zum Verschluss des Lagers – damals für Jahr 2115 prognostiziert, nun im Oktober 2024 für das Jahr 2125, bekanntgegeben. Im Jahr darauf erfolgte die Gründung des Gedenktages, am Sonntag 10. September 2023: Im Haberstal, am Ziel des ersten Endlager-Spaziergangs und des zukünftigen Standorts des nationalen Endlagers für die Brennelemente aller Schweizer Kernkraftwerke.

Project

The project aims is to establish the WNWD as an international memorial day of nuclear waste, as a contribution to the culture of remembrance of nuclear technology. It is to understand as applied and active final storage communication, which evolves with the real storage. Parallel it observes and comments on the communication of the institutions involved and the public reporting on the processes from the search to the closure of the storage. As the project is designed to span generations and is to be continued by the next generations, so it also concerned with the time after:

Projekt

Ein Ziel des Projekts ist, den WNWD als internationalen Tag des Atomaren Abfalls zu etablieren, als Beitrag zur Erinnerungskultur an die Nukleartechnologie. Es versteht sich als aktive und angewandte Endlager-Kommunikation, die sich parallel zum realen Endlager-Prozess entwickelt. Zudem beobachtet und kommentiert es die öffentliche Berichterstattung und die Kommunikation der involvierten Institutionen: Von der Suche über die Einlagerung bis zum Verschluss. Das Projekt ist generationsübergreifend angelegt, und soll von einer nächsten Generation weitergeführt werden. Es befasst sich auch mit der Zeit nach Verschluss:
