No.2 Heisenbergs Offside

Heisenbergs Offside, 2013

World Championship Qualification,
Switzerland – France
Stade de Suisse, Bern Wankdorf

3003 single images, recorded with computer
controlled network camera
from 20:20 to 23:05, October 8, 2005

Heisenberg’s Offside documents a FIFA World Championship Qualification football match in Bern. A computer-controlled network camera was installed on the roof of the stadium exactly above the halfway line. Thirty minutes before the game began, the camera started recording an image every three seconds, advancing in columns from left to right. In the beginning, on the left side of the panorama, the images just show fans, security forces, photographers, journalists. When the game began, the camera reached the green and recorded impressions of the first half of the game – mostly grass, some legs, and some players. After fourteen minutes, it shows 0:0 on the scoreboard. By the time of the interval, the camera reached a banner acknowledging the sponsors in the center of the field. During the second half of the game, the camera again recorded mostly grass. In minute seventy-eight, it shows 1:0 for France on the scoreboard. A column of cheering Swiss fans indicates another goal. The game ended 1:1. After the game, the camera recorded for another thirty minutes, while the audience left the stadium. The ball is never to be seen on the entire panorama. It remained out of view of the camera. The game itself remains mostly invisible. Instead the audience and the gigantic apparatus surrounding the game become the main focus. The title refers to Werner Heisenberg’s uncertainty principle, which asserts that two complimentary properties of a particle cannot be precisely determined simultaneously.

There are three versions of Heisenberg’s Offside. Version 1 is a site-specific panorama installation. Version 2 is a framed inkjet print with the title and a match report printed on the white border. Version 3 is a two-volume book with one photograph on each page in chronological order. Each volume documents a halftime.
