Evolution was a commissioned work for an exhibition on 150 years of architecture photography in the Swiss canton of Grisons at the Kunstmuseum Chur. It refers back to Snow Management Complex (2001–2008), a series of works by Spinatsch on the impact of winter tourism on mountain landscapes. Particularly relevant for Evolution is the series Inventar, which shows temporary architectural structures (often inflatable) used in various winter-sports events.
Over a period of three hours, Spinatsch recorded with a computer-controlled SLR camera a snowboard half-pipe contest at Bolgenschanze, a slope where one of the earliest ski jumps used to stand. The resulting panorama composed of 559 images was shown as a wall installation at Kunstmuseum Chur.
